Despite all the evidence, media reports, exposés, in-depth investigative reports, and government reports, some people still think our water is safe to drink right from the tap.

Farmers, homeowners, lawn care businesses, golf courses, etc., don't seem to realize or care, that their use of chemicals on the land will cause those very same chemicals to wind up back in the water system. Humanity, as a whole, is doing a particularly bad job of caring for the resources of the Earth and yet we wonder why we have water that is not fit to drink.

Contaminated Water Isn't Just a Third World Country Problem

Most people figure that water contamination is a third world problem and that there is no way this could be a complication in America.

Third world countries are not the only locations in the world with serious water contamination issues. The fact is that we have this same issue right in our own backyards, so we can't blame the destruction of water plants on a conflict or war for our problems. Or can we? The war on budgets has far reaching consequences on the quality of our water, whether we want to admit it or not.

Although our infrastructures have not necessarily been ravaged by war, etc., they are succumbing to old age, disrepair, negligence and band-aid therapy to keep them going. To say that the water filtration plants that we have today are woefully inadequate is a major understatement.

What is the best way to treat contaminated water: filtering or distilling? The debate rages on.

It's not news that all around the world we have a serious water contamination issue that puts thousands of people at risk health wise. The most frightening thing is that water contamination isn't "just" water contamination; it may actually be classified into four different categories – radioactive, organic, biological pathogens, and inorganic. Well, take your pick, as they're all bad.

Given that there are these various categories, one wonders which, overall, is the most commonly used contaminant. If you were about to say chlorine, you’d be right. The reason is because it's inexpensive, and since money is the bottom line these days with every "business," which includes local governments, it is still being used in staggering quantities.

It goes without saying that chlorine has a history of being toxic, even way back in the late 1800's when Europeans began to use it to disinfect water. Scary thought isn't it? If we had contaminated water back then, and not much has really improved, this doesn't say a lot about the state of our critical water supplies. Chlorine also has a nasty rep for being a chemical weapon, used during WWI.

It isn't just one or two glasses of water treated with chlorine that happens to be the problem. It's the constant exposure to it that has now raised the risks of getting breast cancer, bladder and colorectal cancer by at least 93%. You should know that your municipal government likely uses chlorine in the water in an effort to kill off biological pathogens.

Ranking in at number two in the most common contaminants list is lead, usually from home water pipes and fixtures with leaded solder joints. If you've ever looked closely at your home water system, you'd see for yourself the amount of lead on board. It's so bad that the US Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 98% of America's homes are using lead contaminated water. Makes you want to put that glass of tap water back on the counter, doesn't it?

We have so much garbage piggybacking along in our water, it's enough to make our heads spin. Pathogens (nasty microbes and viruses) are becoming more common than they ever were, and their entrance to your home is through your taps. There are very few products on the market that effectively remove it, and bottled water certainly isn't a viable option.

Who Is Responsible for Contaminated Tap Water?

Do we really know who is responsible for contaminated water, or do we spend most of our time trying to guess, because no one really knows?

It's a sad fact of life these days that everyone takes it for granted that we are drinking contaminated water. No one even takes the trouble to argue about it any longer either. Now that is a terrible commentary on life in the 21st century. It's come to this because for years we have all relied on our local community, city, town or village to "do" something about our water to make it safe. Perhaps they have attempted to do that, but they're not helping any longer. In fact, things seem to be getting worse.

It has a great deal to do with aging infrastructures and the inability of local water treatment plants to keep up with the heavy influx of contaminants floating around in our water supplies. Could it be that the responsibility for clean water really is up to everyone? Actually, that is the cold hard truth. Stuck with that revelation, we have yet to be effective in dealing with the consequences of polluting our own water and then botching the job of filtering it as well.
